The Cemeteries at Olynthos

Happy New Year!  I hope your 2023 is off to a good start.

As you may have known, I graduated from Michigan last month and I have been thoroughly enjoying my freedom (mostly just sleeping).  In my last year in school, I had the wonderful opportunity to work individually with my favorite archaeology professor on a project that interested me.  I chose to study the cemeteries at the well-known archaeological site (and ancient city) of Olynthos, Greece.  If you remember, this is one of the places I went to while I was in Greece doing archaeology with the university.

Since January 2022, I have worked with data from over 600 ancient burials across three different cemeteries in Olynthos.  The data was contained in a book published in the 1940s that documented a previous dig at Olynthos.  Since then, there have been very few, if any, studies done on these cemeteries.  The data contained in the text had never been digitized or made accessible to the general public.   Once I compiled a document that was searchable and easier to work with, I was able to conduct some original research.  I have condensed my findings into a multimedia presentation called StoryMaps which is hosted with ArcGIS software.  More background about the project and other details are included in the introduction of the StoryMap!

The following project is a combination of original data, original maps, self-created spreadsheets, papers and a lot of time.  It is fairly lengthy but I am extraordinarily excited for it to be published.  If you are curious please feel free to check it out here:

That's all for now!  Stay warm and healthy.

Cheers,
Olivia Carter
